What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also called “mastopexy,” is a procedure in which the breasts are lifted by removing excess skin, then tightening, lifting, and reshaping the breasts. It is an excellent option for women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts but want a more youthful, “uplifted” profile. It is usually undertaken when loss of skin elasticity has caused the breasts to lose their shape and firmness.

It may be done along with breast augmentation surgery or breast reduction surgery to position newly contoured breasts.

What Should I Expect?

There are many possible techniques for a breast lift, and your surgeon will discuss these with you. The technique selected will be chosen based on:

  • Breast size and shape.
  • Location of areola.
  • How much the breast is sagging.
  • Skin elasticity.

Types of Incisions

Every type of breast lift procedure leaves some type of scarring. The location of the scarring and its visibility depends upon the procedure. In many cases, your preferences can be taken into account; in other cases, the procedure the options are limited, based on which one will result in the most desirable outcome.

There are five different breast incisions possible, and all are named for the type of scar they will leave, based on the shape of the incision. These are:

  • The crescent lift
  • The donut lift
  • The lollipop lift
  • The anchor or inverted T lift
  • The horizontal lift

What is recovery like?

Surgical dressings are removed and replaced with a supportive surgical bra at the first postoperative appointment. This bra should be worn 24/7 for three weeks.

Most women can return to work in one week, and do light exercise in three weeks, and strenuous activity after five weeks.

Which Procedure Leaves the Least Visible Scarring?

There is a procedure called the “scarless” lift, and it is used only when a mild lift is wanted. There is no actual incision into the breast. Rather, a network of tiny incisions is made near the collarbone. The surgical threads are inserted there, woven under the breast, and then brought back up to the collarbone, creating a sort of internal bra. The incisions are fairly minute at the collarbone so, although there are technically scars there, they are typically almost invisible.

How Long Will the Improvement Last?

While the procedure will not halt the effects of gravity and aging over time, the results of breast lifts are typically long lasting, especially if a fairly constant weight is maintained.
